Ecommerce social media checklist for release gates

This ecommerce social media checklist covers release checks for disclosures, product paths, accessibility, catalog data, returns, and evidence.

What to take away

  • Verify the current agreement and live account before relying on a feature.
  • Check the complete path from creative to service and return.
  • Assign evidence and an owner to every material approval.

An ecommerce social media checklist should prevent customer and operational failures before distribution. Run the full review for a new platform, shop, creator program, or format. Use a shorter release check only when the underlying rules and product state remain proven.

Preflight the commerce system

TikTok Shop's U.S. Seller Terms are an evidence check, not a substitute for this review. For the seller, account, market, and date in scope, verify the live terms and save the applicable version with the release record. This article provides a cross-platform release checklist; it does not summarize TikTok Shop's seller requirements.

Disclose the connection

Every paid, gifted, or affiliate relationship has to be visible. The FTC's Endorsement Guides, 16 CFR Part 255, require clear and conspicuous disclosure of a material connection between a brand and the person posting about it, and a label buried below the caption cut-off does not count.

Use the label the platform provides: “Paid partnership” on Instagram and Facebook, the paid partnership tag on Snapchat, the “Includes paid promotion” checkbox on YouTube, and the branded content disclosure on TikTok. Where no tool exists, put #ad at the front of the caption, above the “more” line.

Name the platforms you sell on

Start by listing the channels you use: TikTok Shop, Instagram Shopping, Facebook Shops, Pinterest shopping ads, YouTube Shopping, Snapchat, and X. For each, treat account eligibility and current terms as a separate release check; this checklist does not state each service's approval criteria or reproduce its current rules. Do not assume a catalog approved on one channel will work on another.

Preflight Commerce System Checks

  • Rolesseller, platform, creator, agency named
  • Termscurrent agreement and market verified
  • Productitem, variant, claims, price accurate
  • Creativeproduct, text, audio preserve truth
  • Disclosurerelationship clear in final placement
  • Catalogfeed, diagnostics, tag, destination pass
  • Accessaccounts, recovery, roles, approvals controlled

Test a post through the real publication and buying path, inspect mobile and desktop placements, captions, sound-off meaning, disclosure, product tag.

Check destination, variant, price, promotion, shipping, use a test record where the platform permits it.

Check returns, checkout, confirmation, service, a full test run exposes ecommerce social media mistakes that only appear once a real buyer moves through checkout.

Check accessibility before you schedule

Accessibility belongs in the gate. Work to WCAG 2.1 Level AA: alternative text on every product image, captions on video that carries sound, contrast that holds up on overlays and buttons, and a checkout a customer can finish with a keyboard and a screen reader.

Verify paid shopping setup

Pinterest's documentation for shopping ads describes product groups, campaign setup, and related product-catalog behavior in its business product. Use the Pinterest documentation as a pointer, then verify the available workflow and labels in the live account. This cross-platform checklist does not reproduce Pinterest's full policy or approval criteria.

Before spend starts, confirm the catalog is complete. Populate every field the platform marks as required; common product fields include the product identifier, title, description, availability, price, link, and image. Then resolve errors shown by the platform's own feed and tag diagnostics, and verify that the tag format in use (the platform pixel, a server-side or conversions API event, or a catalog tag) passes its checks. Required fields, diagnostics, and labels vary by platform, so inspect the platform's status rather than assuming a rejected feed is simply quiet.

Verify Paid Shopping Setup

  1. Confirm promoted product group and eligible items
  2. Check country, currency, price, stock, destination
  3. Review audience exclusions and frequency
  4. Open every version of ad and product link
  5. Verify reporting and billing ownership
  6. Prepare pause, correction, customer-response actions

After launch, sample tags and destinations, inspect catalog diagnostics, watch service themes, and reconcile billed media with accepted orders, cancellations, returns, commission, and contribution. Stop when a material fact or customer-control path fails.

Archive the final asset, caption, disclosure, product record, audience, approvals, rights, source URLs, and release time. The evidence should survive a platform export or agency transition.

Record the gate result

Data has to be part of the same review. Confirm what the platform sends back to you after a social checkout, what your own privacy notice promises customers, and who owns the customer record. The ecommerce social checklist should name that owner before launch rather than after a complaint.

Returns and refunds should be decided before the first sale. Under the FTC's Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule, a seller that does not state a shipping time has to ship within the period the rule sets and refund when it cannot. If no time is clearly and conspicuously stated, the seller must ship within thirty (30) days after receipt of a properly completed order from the buyer. That is a shipping deadline, not a return window. Before a sale, state the return/refund policy and check the applicable platform terms for any additional requirements, including the return window and who pays return shipping; this checklist does not give platform-by-platform terms. Post the policy on the product page and inside the checkout so a buyer sees it before paying.

For every checklist item, record pass, fail, not applicable, or accepted exception. Add the evidence location, reviewer, decision date, and next review. A checked box without proof cannot protect a release. Stop the work when a mandatory privacy, security, data-quality, accessibility, or correction condition fails, even if the remaining score looks favorable.

Keep the evidence beside the decision so a reviewer can reproduce the reasoning without relying on memory. Record the next review date and the change that would force an earlier one — a new platform term, a new disclosure label, a feed format change, or a shift in the return policy.

Record rejected options as well as the chosen path because the original constraint may later change. The same evidence habit applies to ecommerce email marketing mistakes, where a saved record shows what was sent and why.

Common questions

Who signs off?

Use named owners for product, claims, commerce, creative, disclosure, access, service, measurement, and any required legal review.

Is a preview enough?

No. Inspect the final placement and complete destination on representative devices and accounts.

What blocks release?

A material failure in truth, disclosure, eligibility, customer control, access, safety, checkout, or service should block it.
